Historic Signage Walking Tour

Pick up a copy of the Historic Signage Walking Tour for a walk around Downtown’s historical features. Available at the Explore Fairbanks desk. 

Historic Site - Gould Cabin

Located on the grounds of the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center is a log cabin built in 1910, one of the last remaining original homes in early Fairbanks city history in its original location. 

Historic Sites

Between 1903 and 1978, more than 2,000 people were buried here, including Mary Pedro, wife of Felix Pedro, the Italian immigrant who first discovered gold in the Fairbanks area. Open to the public. 

Breweries/Distilleries

Delicious, fresh crafted beer and spirits made with local ingredients await in the pubs, bars, restaurants and tasting rooms of Fairbanks. There are choices within walking distance of Downtown. Most venues open 12 p.m.-9 p.m. on weekends and 2 p.m.-8 p.m. on weekdays. 

Chena River Float

Rent a canoe, kayak or SUP and take a scenic float down the Chena River. Various distances and tour options exist.

Nature/Recreation

Throughout the Sanctuary there are 14 interpretive signs and a network of trails to explore. Trails open continuously.

Public parklands accessible from Downtown offer unlimited opportunities for nature walks, bike rides or floating the Chena. 

Sports

There are plenty of captivating spectator sports to cheer for while in Fairbanks. Everything from youth sports to disc golf and the World Eskimo-Indian Olympics (July) can be seen in Fairbanks on a warm summer night. Try your luck at the farthest north disc golf courses or sign up for a yoga class. The active visitor to Fairbanks will never be at a loss for fun, physical ways to explore and enjoy Interior Alaska.

Pioneer Park

Enjoy a walk around the historic themed park while exploring museums, live entertainment and a variety of food options. Most things open 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.  

Painted Pipes

Visit thirteen vent pipes that stand adjacent to the streets and sidewalks of downtown and provide fresh air intake for the underground utilidor. These pipes were painted in original designs by thirteen local artists in the fall of 2012.  

Public Art

Murals, found art, and sculpture are located throughout the Fairbanks area. Make a stop at one or more of these fascinating venues during your visit.  

Morris Thompson Cultural & Visitors Center

FREE! World-class exhibits celebrating the people, land and culture of Interior Alaska. Free films and WiFi. Located on the banks of the Chena River in downtown Fairbanks. Open Daily 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. (Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend) 

Delta Visitors' Center
White Mountains National Recreation Area

Located just an hour’s drive on the Steese or Elliot Highways. Summer visitors to the White Mountains pan for gold, fish, hike and camp under Alaska’s ‘midnight sun’. 

Alyeska Pipeline / Viewing Point

View a portion of the 800-mile Trans Alaska Pipeline. An accessible path and interpretive signs explain the significance and engineering of this Alaska landmark. Driving distance from Fairbanks, 8 miles north on the Steese Highway. 

Chena River State Recreation Area

An interior boreal forest with trails, access for floating the Chena River, fishing and wildlife watching opportunities. 

Beaver Springs Slough Nature Trail

The 0.8 mile trail provides a patch of undeveloped land of towering black spruce, paper birch and forest undergrowth where you find a thriving beaver and muskrat population, small mammals, water fowl, and perching birds. Moose frequent the trail. Interpretive signage is located along the length of the trail.  

North Pole, Alaska

Where “the spirit of Christmas lives year-round” is a short 20-minute drive from Fairbanks. Drive along Santa Claus Lane and admire the streetlights decorated in candy cane motifs. Visit a restaurant, taphouse or cafe for a local taste. Hiking trails, bike paths, a skatepark and numerous playgrounds provide hours of outdoor entertainment.

Chena Lake Recreation Area

Located in North Pole and consisting of two parks, the Lake Park and the River Park, this rec area is open year-round. There’s bike paths and nature trails within, as well as camping, fishing and picnic sites. Distance from Fairbanks is about 25 miles.

Golfing Under the Midnight Sun

Fairbanks has three golf courses – the Fairbanks Golf Course, Midnight Sun Golf Course and the Chena Bend Golf Course. Check to see if the course offers a special rate after midnight. Don’t be surprised if you spot a moose or a fox on the fairway! 

Tanana Lakes Recreation Area

Plenty of outdoor opportunities year-round for people of all ages including boating, swimming, hiking and fishing in the summer. 

Birch Hill Trails and Disc Golf Course

A cross country-ski area with many trails for hiking, biking and an 18-hole disc golf course in the summer. 

Ester Dome

Ester Dome offers outstanding views of the White Mountains to the north, the Alaska Range and the Tanana River Valley to the south, and on very clear days - Denali, over 200 miles to the southeast. Distance from Fairbanks is about 13 miles. 

Murphy Dome

The highest point close to Fairbanks at 2,877 ft. Take in the beautiful panoramic vista as the sunset merges with the sunrise at the height of Midnight Sun. Distance from Fairbanks is about 28 miles. 

UAF Planet Walk start (Sun)

Take an out-of-this-world stroll along the UAF Planet Walk! This 1:4.4 billion scale model of the solar system is spread out along Yukon Drive on the northwest part of the UAF campus and overlooks the flats of the Tanana River. Start at the sun located on the western edge of the ridge.  

Georgeson Botanical Garden

This garden discovers and shares knowledge about high latitude horticulture over 8 acres. The garden is open from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend.  

Large Animal Research Station

Reindeer and muskoxen roam a field on the northern edge of campus. University researchers and students study the animals’ nutrition, physiology and behavior.   

Wildfire Walk

Learn about wildfire research and management. The trail can be found across from the Large Animal Research Station parking lot. 

UAF Disc Golf Course - 9 hole course

18 hole campus course on the ski trails of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. A nice mix of wooded holes and open fields. Set up each spring after breakup and taken down once snow falls.
